WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
Inflammation in the gums causes weakening of the blood vessels in the gum and supporting tissues around the teeth.
The primary cause of this bleeding is insufficient ‘plaque’ removal which is due to ineffective brushing.
HOW DO I TREAT GUM DISEASE?
Once you remove the plaque, the source of the problem is removed, the gum will heal, toughen up and won’t bleed when gently rubbed.
If the bleeding continues please arrange an appointment with Dr. Lavery straight away as it may be an indicator that the gum problem is more severe.
You need to brush your teeth effectively. When you ‘clean’ your teeth, it is not the intention to simply make them look good or remove food debris. A more accurate word is ‘disinfection’ or the ‘removal of toxic bacteria and congealed acidic material’ because this is what plaque is.
Plaque is a nearly invisible, sticky white paste that forms on the teeth and gums every day. Plaque harbours dangerous bacteria and when it is present for long periods of time, these bacteria become more aggressive. Plaque can ‘eat’ holes in the tooth and irritate the gum.
If the plaque is not removed, it hardens and becomes calculus, which cannot be dislodged with a tooth brush or interdental brush, which requires help from your dentist. If you ignore calculus, periodontal disease will follow.
WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE?
This is a condition in which the body sends in repair cells and ‘bacteria attacking’ cells to try to heal the inflamed and infected area. Unfortunately, these cells attack everything, including the bone which supports the teeth. This may eventually cause the tooth to fall out.
Many patients do not know they have ‘gum disease’ because the gum on the outside looks the same, but underneath the support for the tooth has become damaged. These areas are called periodontal pockets.
INTERDENTAL BRUSHES ARE VERY HELPFUL TO AID CLEANING THESE POCKETS.
Dr. Lavery advises all her patients to supplement their diet with vitamin C supplements which aids the healing process after gum therapy treatments.
Dr. Lavery has a special interest in treating gum disease with a very high rate of remission of the initial symptoms as she understands that gum disease has many causes and can tailor a treatment plan specifically for you, including the very latest medical advances in gum therapy management.
WHAT IS THE COST OF GUM TREATMENTS?
The cost of gum therapy depends on the severity of the gum problem. Sometimes Dr. Lavery will refer you to a specialist dentist, a periodontist, to treat your gum disease. This occurs very rarely as Dr. Lavery is passionate about treating gum disease and the overall health of her patients.
Prior to commencing any treatment, Dr. Lavery will provide a detailed treatment plan of the associated costs of getting your gums healthy.
