I’ve Never Heard of Carboxy Treatment – What Is It?
The use of carbon dioxide gas in medicine is not a novel technique. But has been used in medical therapies for centuries.
Carboxytherapy was developed in France during the 1930s, where it was found to speed up wound healing. In 1950, it was used by cardiologists to treat patients with coronary artery disease.
Since 1995, it has in creased in popularity in the field of aesthetics, lipolysis and skin rejuvenation treatments.
Carboxytherapy uses a naturally occurring gas carbon dioxide [CO2] to eliminate fat cells, improve blood flow, increase skin plumpness, reduce wrinkles and reduce cellulite. It is administered to the subcutaneous tissue through a very small needle through the skin in the area of treatment.
Okay, Interesting, But How Does Carboxytherapy Work?
Carbon dioxide [CO2] delivery “tricks” the body into thinking it’s not got enough oxygen [O2] in the subcutaneous tissue, so the blood flow is immediately stimulated in the treated area, delivering high amounts of oxygen [O2] into the tissue from the red blood cells (erythrocytes) and allows the elimination of carbon dioxide through the lungs.
The body will always try to correct an imbalance so it increases blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin. This ultimately improves the appearance of the skin.
This phenomenon is called the Bohr Effect
Effects of CO2 in the tissue
- Vasodilation – Increased blood flow with a higher concentration of O2 in the treated area.
- Neo-Angiogenesis – New blood vessels in the treated area.
- Lipo Dissolution – Fat cells are destroyed also know as oxidative lipolytic Effect.
What Can Carboxytherapy Be Used For?
- Skin Rejuvenation
- Dark Under Eye Circles
- Fat Pads Under Eyes
- Acne Scars
- Surgical Scars
- Nasolabial Folds
- Perio-Oval Wrinkles (Smokers Lines)
- Double Chin/ Submental Fat Pads
- Jowls/Sagging Skin
When Should I Start Carboxytherapy?
Carboxytherapy and skin tightening is suitable for anyone in their thirties or above, as they may be a suitable candidate for a little skin tightening and firming around the eye and jowl area. The younger the patient the better the result.
Eight out of ten patients get noticeable improvement in their skin laxity around the eyes after the first two treatments and most will see an improvement in the skin colour, luminosity and texture.
Tighter, firmer skin supports the face and prevents the other soft tissues and the muscles from sagging.
The new concept today is to start with tightening and collagen rejuvenation treatments early.
How Many Treatments Are Necessary?
Typically, in the face 6-8 treatments of carboxytherapy sessions are required. Sessions being 1-2 weeks apart. Maintenance is required every 6 months.
How Much Is Carboxytherapy?
A consultation is always recommended. Dr. Martina will use it to asses your concerns, and costs per treatment will be detailed at this appointment.
Is Carboxytherapy Safe?
Carboxytherapy is very safe done with the correct protocols and pre-treatment medical consultation with a doctor.
Carbon dioxide gas is a naturally occurring gas and is nontoxic even at high levels.
After treatment, the gas is totally eliminated after 5 minutes and the area returns to normal. Carboxytherapy has been used safely in more than 30,000 patients with no complications.
What Can I Expect Before and After a Carboxytherapy Treatment?
During the treatment, a topical numbing cream is applied to the area of treatment to allow a comfortable placement of the small needle tip.
The sensation of the gas being administered is similar to a dull throb or pressure. This mild discomfort lasts for 2-4 minutes. After 5 minutes, the area is receiving lots of oxygen and may appear red, which stimulates collagen production.
The main side effect is the risk of bruising. This truly is a walk in, walk out procedure with minimal downtime.
Can All Skin Types be safely treated with Carboxytherapy?
Carboxytherapy safely treats all skin types without significant pain or downtime.
