Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition where breathing is interrupted during sleep.
Patients may complain of daytime sleepiness, broken sleep, feeling low on energy or fatigued during the day with lower cognitive function.
The partner of the patient may report loud snoring with pauses in breathing during sleep.
Certain lifestyle factors like; obesity, excessive alcohol consumption and chronic medical conditions such as high blood pressure may contribute also.
How We Can Determine Your Risk
Dr Lavery can assess your risk factors and refer you to a sleep specialist to have a sleep study to assess your suitability for trialling a mandibular advancement splint or CPAP, this will depend on the severity of the apnoea diagnosed during the sleep study.
Patients with mild apnoea are suitable to trial a mandibular advancement device (MAD) which stabilises the jaw position and brings the tongue forward to reduce snoring and mild apnoea.
“Oral or mandibular advancement devices – like the O2VentTM are emerging as an accepted alternative treatment for sleep-disordered breathing conditions with recent studies showing similar long-term health outcomes1. The recent Oventus clinical trial showed that 100 percent of patients experienced a significant reduction in snoring” – Oventus (http://oventus.com.au/faqs/)
